Why Belly Dancing?
Belly dancing incorporates fitness and flexibility with something a little different - it is not too challenging for beginners. Ballet requires patience and flexibility and funk movements are usually complex. Belly dancing is safe, easy and effective while at the same time offering a varied and relaxing workout.
Maria Sangiori of Dancing Isis is a well known and respected teacher of this wonderful method of exercise, and she explains:
"Like anything based on movement you have obvious physical benefits. The nature of belly dancing is different because it works from the inside out. It's really good for your organs and the internals of your body. It works your joints in a circular way, from your feet to your skull and all your joints have to move to do these flowing movements. Belly dancing is really very unique".
The Origins of Belly Dancing
In the past, belly dancing was always part of a celebration and ritual, and the modern version is true to its origins. Belly dancing can be easily incorporated into a weekly routine that includes yoga and cardio exercise. In its most basic, raw form the dance focuses on a mixture of flexibility and movement which promotes a sense of relaxation and meditation and offers similar benefits to yoga. It also incorporates flowing movements with breathing and muscle control techniques.
Belly dancing was once a way of life, and even today it takes its participants on a journey of physical and spiritual awareness as well as self discovery. As with all forms of dance it relies on original interpretation and generates all sorts of feelings and emotions.
The origin of belly dance belongs to many different countries and cultures; it is widely spread through the Middle East and Persia as well as North Africa, Turkey and some parts of China. The Egyptian style of belly dance is often performed at weddings.
Belly dance is seen largely as a dance for women and in many countries girls are taught the origins from a very young age. The dance is based on the natural curves of the female body, incorporating hip circles and figure eights. It also represents femininity and fertility.
Belly Dancing Attire
Many dancers will wear wide skirts with scarves tied low on their hips to accentuate the movements of the pelvis. However, there is no need to adorn your body with a tiny two piece costume if you do not feel comfortable doing so, and the veils and swords that make an appearance in many performances aren't a necessity. The variety of styles simply means the dance can be taught to anyone willing to learn in a pair of leggings, hip scarf and t-shirt. It is also acceptable to layer skirts, scarves and body stockings on order to add some creative flair.
Belly Dancing Benefits
Belly dancing is lots of fun and the numerous health benefits confirm its longevity. It is a dance that promotes well-being, flexibility and co-ordination without being intrusive. It can complement yoga as it also gives a sense of being in tune with one's own body. The simple movements are equally effective as the more complex ones and almost anyone of any age, shape or size can participate. Movements can be slow and low impact or sharp, depending on each individual's comfort level and preference. Belly dance has assisted many pregnant women before and during pregnancy, allowing them to become more aware of their abdominal, lower back and pelvic floor muscles, in turn strengthening them.
Belly dance is relaxing, rejuvenating and encourages self awareness. It is possible to connect the mind and body by combining physical movement with holistic approaches, which is precisely what belly dancing aims to do.
